The University of Wisconsin – Marathon County Office of Continuing Education is offering a four-night educational tour that focuses on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.

The Springfield, Ill. trip will depart June 3 from Wausau and will return June 7.

Through a series of fascinating field trips and lectures, discover Abraham Lincoln with some of the most significant historic places in Springfield. Join Brett Barker, UW Professor, local experts and historians to explore the place that were important to Lincoln and other Springfield citizens. Visit other architecturally significant places around Springfield like two of the earliest homes in the city and one of the most “complete” examples of “Prairie–style” home by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Stops to include: the Lincoln Tomb, Lincoln Home – A National Historic Site, tour of Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Tour of the Old state capital and law office, guided tour of the Train station address by Dr. Brett Barker, and visit to Lincoln’ reconstructed historic site, New Salem and much MORE!

Your Guide: Dr. Brett Barker is a Civil War historian who has had a lifelong fascination with Lincoln, first visiting Springfield in his teens. He received his Ph.D. from UW-Madison and is Professor of History at UW-Marathon County, where he has taught since 2002. He is the author of Exploring Civil War Wisconsin: A Survival Guide for Researchers (UW Press) and his current research project on the northern home front argues that Lincoln’s leadership and public speeches were crucial in maintaining support for the Civil War among northerners.
