Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 will focus on a new plan by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to limit the amount of phosphorous in the Wisconsin River watershed.
The issue will be discussed during the show at 10 a.m. on Thursday, taking live listener calls at 1-800-780-9742. The program is re-broadcast at 7 p.m. Fridays on 90.9 Wausau.
The ambitious plan is seen as a way to reduce toxic blue-green algae in the river’s flowages by controlling phosphorous in farm field runoff and waste water treatment plant discharges. Host Glen Moberg will moderate a discussion with Kevin Kirsch, water resource engineer for the DNR; Ken Schroeder, UW Extension agriculture agent for Portage County; and Rick Georgeson, president of the environmental group Petenwell and Castle Rock Stewards (PACRS). Georgeson, a Lake Petenwell homeowner, lobbied for the 2009 Wisconsin River watershed study that led to the new DNR phosphorous plan.
