By Shereen Siewert — A slow-moving low pressure system is expected to dump up to 7 inches of snow throughout the Wausau metro region beginning tonight, potentially snarling traffic and creating potentially hazardous travel conditions
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Marathon County beginning at 6 p.m. Monday and extending through Tuesday. Snow is expected to become moderate or heavy at times tonight, tapering off to lighter snow on Tuesday. Gusty east winds could produce blowing snow, impacting both road and air travel, the NWS said.
Winds could top out at about 40 mph, creating visibility issues and complicating crews’ efforts to clear roadways.
In some areas near the Twin Cities, schools have already canceled classes in anticipation of the storm, which is projected to hit Minneapolis around noon. There, a winter storm warning is in effect, as morning rains are expected to turn into snow, creating an icy, slippery mess.
