WAUSAU — Five members of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department are being recognized for their courage and heroism in responding to two separate incidents last year, according to Sheriff Scott Parks.

Megan Sowinski, Brandon Stroik, Matthew Bell, Greg Bean and Sean McCarthy will receive their awards Saturday at the Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) banquet in Wisconsin Dells.

Deputy Megan Sowinski and Deputy Brandon Stroik have been awarded the WPPA 2018 Award for Valor for their courageous and selfless actions when they encountered an armed hostage situation on March 2, 2017.

Deputy Matthew Bell has been awarded the WPPA 2018 Award for Valor for his fearless and courageous action when he encountered an armed suspect on March 22, 2017. In that same action, Captain Greg Bean and Captain Sean McCarthy earned the WPPA 2018 Meritorious Award for their courageous actions providing direct support to Deputy Bell.

Parks said these are high awards given to outstanding people who represent the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department exceptionally well.

“The awards have a portion which reads about the actions taken by the above individuals are inspiring to all fellow law enforcement officers. I could not agree more,” Parks wrote, in a Facebook post. “They are impressive individuals who faced incredible circumstances remaining steadfast ensuring the safety of the community was maintained.

“Congratulations Deputy Sowinski, Deputy Stroik, Deputy Bell, Captain Bean and Captain McCarthy. You represent the entire staff of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office and I am honored to be your Sheriff.”
