WAUSAU — Wausau West High School grad Payton Nelson will join the Wisconsin Woodchucks as an outfielder for the 2018 season.

Nelson, originally from Wausau, is playing in his first baseball season at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, according to a Woodchucks news release. The 5’9” freshman is batting .282 with 24 RBI, nine doubles, two triples and one home run.

Nelson attended Wausau West and was named to the first-team All-Wisconsin Valley Conference sophomore through senior years. He was named the Wisconsin Valley Conference player of the year his senior year, in addition to first-team all-district, first-team all-state, district player of the year and Wisconsin Sports Top Outfield in the state senior year. He also helped Wausau West to the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship in 2017.
