MADISON — Veteran journalist Carrie Kaufman has joined Wisconsin Public Radio as host of “The Morning Show.”
“Carrie brings an energy and a passion that we’re excited to share with listeners,” The Ideas Network Director Sheryl Gasser said in a WPR news release. Kaufman can be heard weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. statewide on The Ideas Network beginning June 4.
Kaufman brings 25 years’ experience in broadcast, print and digital journalism to WPR, most recently producing and hosting the daily talk program “State of Nevada” at public radio station KNPR in Las Vegas, according to the news release. At KNPR, she covered major news stories, including the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. She also participated in NPR’s State Governance Team, a multi-station partnership covering state legislatures, policy and politics. Her work has also been heard on NPR’s popular news program, “Morning Edition.”
“WPR listeners are smart, informed and passionate about the issues,” Kaufman said in the release. “The host and producers are important, they set the tone for the show, but listeners drive the narrative. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been on the air and a listener has called in with a perspective that nobody in the room had considered before. That’s what makes it such a vital relationship. I’m excited to start hosting and to hear from Wisconsinites on the show.”
Kaufman lived in Chicago for more than 20 years and founded and published “PerformInk,” a print and digital publication focused on the city’s film and theater industry, according to the release. While in Chicago, she also hosted “LesBiGay Radio,” the nation’s first drive-time radio program focused on the LGBT community. In 2007, her selection as a finalist in the Public Radio Talent Quest sent her headlong into public media.
From politics to pop-culture, “The Morning Show” is The Ideas Network’s flagship call-in program.
