TOWN OF ALMOND — A 31-year-old man is in custody in connection with a fatal shooting early Saturday evening, police said.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Department responded at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday to the shooting at a home on Fourth Avenue in the town of Almond. Police say several shots were fired at the scene before the suspect fled. He was arrested about an hour later.

One man died in the shooting, according to police. The victim’s name and age have not been released, and police did not say what they believe led to the shooting.

While the suspect was still at large, officials at Almond High School were forced to temporarily suspend the school’s prom. The students eventually were moved to a different location.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is being held in the Portage County jail on preliminary charges of homicide.
