WAUSAU — Police have located a religious statue stolen over the weekend from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wausau.

Wausau Police posted a statement on Facebook Monday evening saying they are arranging for the statue’s safe return and have identified the person responsible for the theft.

The all-white 5-foot statue of Mary was stolen sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, officials said. The statue, which is made of concrete, had been positioned atop a stone pedestal outside St. Mary’s, 325 Grand Ave. in Wausau.

The name of the suspect has not been released. Church officials on Monday appealed to the thieves, offering not to press charges if the statue was returned safely.
