It’s been awhile since I had a chance to check out Milwaukee Burger Co. in Wausau, so when 715Delivery asked me to give it a try, I was happy to oblige. This time around, my dining companion was my 22-year-old son, home for a week before starting a new job in the Twin Cities.

Since we were both enjoying some leisure time, he ordered a beer while I chose a Bloody Mary to start my meal. In truth, I didn’t look hard at the Bloody Mary choices on the menu (there are several), so when our waiter brought our drinks, my jaw just about dropped to the floor. This, my friends, was no ordinary Bloody Mary; it was a meal in itself.

The Big Mil Bloody Mary at Milwaukee Burger Co. is a meal in itself.

The Big Mil Bloody, as this magnificent beast is called, is truly the ultimate in Bloody Mary experiences. The 32-ounce drink ($10.99), perfectly mixed with not too much Worcestershire (a key point, in my opinion) is absolutely jam packed with garnishes that would be perfect for, say, the morning after a big night out. The drink comes complete with a beef stick, pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, and a mini bacon cheeseburger, plus the usual celery and olives. Frankly, I could have stopped right there…but a job is a job, right? I had to press on.

Next, our server brought us a platter of cheese curds. We couldn’t decide which flavor we wanted, so we tried the sampler ($10.99), with Classic, Mozzarella, Fair, and Pepper Jack curds paired with two dipping sauces. The curds were fried to perfection and it was tough to choose our favorites, though in the end we both agreed if we had to choose just one, it would be the Pepper Jack variety. But, it was a tough call.

Chicken avocado sandwich and bleu cheese potato salad

Our next big decision was a tough one, because with so many fantastic burger choices in the offing (the Spicy Blue Jack, the Do Gooder, and the Brown Sugar & Smoked Cheddar top our list for next time) it was hard to narrow things down. Ultimately, I thought I’d get something “a little lighter” in the Chicken Avocado sandwich ($9.49) which turned out to be an excellent choice (though I suspect the calorie count might shock me anyway). This is a grilled chicken breast on a soft bun, topped with large slices of avocado, cheddar cheese, salsa and garlic mayo, served with a choice of side. I always like to try something a little out of the ordinary, so I opted for the warm bleu cheese potato salad, something my son insisted was going to be…well…a disappointment.

Thankfully, he was wrong. The potato salad was actually one of the highlights of the meal, and something I will gladly order again.

My son ordered the Milwaukee Cheesesteak ($10.99), which is seared steak topped with a pepper jack cheese sauce, another specialty sauce, jalapenos, onions and green peppers and served on a lightly toasted French bun. He appreciated that it didn’t come with mushrooms, and it was seriously large enough to feed two people. For his side, he chose Cajun fries, which were good, but the seasoning was just a tad heavier than he might like if he was going to be picky about it. The sandwich, though, was utterly delicious, and he nearly finished the whole thing.

When our server asked if we wanted dessert, we both burst out laughing — with that much food, there’s no way we could have stuffed any more in. So, we asked for a to-go box for our leftovers and practically rolled out the door, vowing to return again soon during Happy Hour, when they offer a select group of $5 appetizers and $2 off most drinks.

Our verdict: Milwaukee Burger has an excellent menu, satisfying portions (and then some), served up in a fun, friendly environment.
