WAUSAU — Two local health groups have joined forces to host “Resilience,” a powerful documentary that focuses on just that, resiliency.

On Tuesday, June 5, the AOD Partnership, in conjunction with the Marathon County Health Department, will show “Resilience,” followed by a community discussion at Northcentral Technical College (Room E101) in Wausau. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At this meeting, participants will view the documentary, learn about what is happening locally to focus on resiliency, and participate in a community discussion as to how adverse child events impact them and what they can do as a community to support youth – thereby supporting their future.

According to AOD Partnership, there has been an increase in research around how adverse childhood events can leave a lasting biological marker that can impact youth well into adulthood. The key is to build resiliency — the ability to thrive, adapt and cope despite tough and stressful times. The more resilient the child, the more likely he or she will be able to fix a negative situation in a healthy way.

“Everyone has the ability to become resilient when surrounded by the right supports,” said Samantha Pinzl, health educator with the Marathon County Health Department, in the news release. “When we universally change the conversation from ‘What’s wrong with you?’ to ‘What happened to you?’ we will be better equipped to build a healthier, more resilient community.”
