WAUSAU — A 50-year-old man accused of crawling into the bed of an 8-year-old girl and sexually assaulting her also had child pornography on his computer, police said.

Greg Witter appeared Thursday in Marathon County Circuit Court, where he faces charges of first degree sexual assault of a child younger than 12 and 10 counts of possessing child pornography. Circuit Judge Greg Huber ordered Witter held on $50,000 cash bond.

An investigation began after the girl, who is now 13, told a family member about the alleged assault, which happened in 2013 while the girl’s mother was dating Witter. The girl told police she was sleeping at Witter’s home when Witter forced himself on her during the night.

Police say a search of Witter’s home revealed child pornography on his computer, which was seized as evidence.

A search of court records shows Witter has just one prior criminal conviction, a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct dating back to 2010.

If Witter is convicted on all charges, he faces up to 310 years in the Wisconsin Prison System. A preliminary hearing is set for June 25.
