The Sixth Street Filling Station has been around for years, and it’s flourished under the current management. It’s a breakfast and lunch joint, since they’re open 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed on Mondays, and the staff is courteous, helpful and fun.

It looks like an old time gas station inside. There’s a hub cap installation, a row of tire-sized advertisements from different manufacturers, pictures and so much other stuff. Makes for some very interesting surroundings.

I went with the fish tacos, served with homemade chips and lime slaw, iced tea to drink, $11 with gratuity. Not bad. The tacos were stuffed with grilled white fish, cheddar cheese, cilantro and topped off with a jack fruit pico which added a sweet and tangy flavor. All this baked inside a couple flour tortillas. They were a little messy, but burst with fresh, tropical flavor.

The homemade chips were super crispy, as evidenced by the golden brown color. They were baked and salted, but were a bit too crispy for my taste. The lime slaw had a tart little kick to it that matched the jack fruit pico on the tacos for a complete and consistent meal experience. The meal came garnished with a sweet pickle spear, which was interesting since dill is so common ‘round these parts.

On the way out, I grabbed a single scoop of mint fudge ice cream in a waffle cone: $4 with tip. The ice cream was amazing creamy goodness with big, thick chunks of fudge throughout. The waffle cone was an unsweetened no-nonsense affair that tasted like a regular cone. It kept the ice cream contained and didn’t get in the way. Would. Buy. Again.

This lunch was quite honestly a joy. It wasn’t my first visit to this place, and it’s been like this every time. The food is great and the people are nice, theme’s on point, I’ll go back again. I wish they had better hours though.

Check out my video and see what I’m talking about. And give Sixth Street Filling Station a try. It’s a great place.

One reply on “Video food review: Sixth Street Filling Station lives up to its name”

  1. I like to meet my friends for breakfast at Sixth Street Filling Station. The current owners are the best since Joan left several years ago. She was instrumental in making the Filling Station a great neighborhood restaurant and am so pleased to see the current owners bring back the same wonderful quality of food and service. Thanks for this nice review.
