Nancy Stencil, chair of the Democratic Party of Marathon County, on Tuesday announced her candidacy for the Wisconsin State Assembly’s 86th Assembly District, a seat currently held by Republican John Spiros of Marshfield.
Stencil made the announcement Tuesday in a news release. Spiros, who defeated Stencil in the past two elections, will also face a primary opponent. Mosinee Mayor Brent Jacobson announced his candidacy in January. Jacobson will run as a Republican.
Stencil has lived in Rib Mountain for the last 30 years and is a lifelong Marathon County resident, according to the release. She is a mental health professional in the crisis center at North Central Healthcare Center and was elected chair of the Democratic Party of Marathon County in 2016.
“The state is starting to move in a progressive direction again,” Stencil wrote in her release. “But there is a lot of work yet to be done. As I said before, there is a lot of enthusiasm among regular people right now. We can build on that enthusiasm towards a state that will benefit everyone.”
Wisconsin’s 86th Assembly District includes parts of southwestern Marathon and northern Wood counties, including the municipalities of Kronenwetter, Mosinee, Rib Mountain, Weston and part of the city of Marshfield.
Stencil will host a campaign kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the Marathon County Democratic Party Office, 218 Sherman St., Wausau.
