WAUSAU — About 100 people gathered Saturday at The 400 Block in downtown Wausau to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies, one of hundreds of “Families Belong Together” rallies nationwide.
Many protestors carried handmade signs with slogans such as “Compassion, Not Cages” and “The Golden Rule ‘Trumps’ Zero Tolerance,” among others. Two speakers urged protestors to speak out against what they see as hateful rhetoric and inhumane treatment of children.
“I’ve never been so fired up in my life,” said Mika Hernandez, 27, who attended the rally with her two young children. “Keeping kids, babies, from their parents. I never thought I’d see this in America.”
More than 700 protests were held from coast to coast Saturday morning to “tell Donald Trump and his administration to permanently end the separation of kids from their parents,” according to the Families Belong Together event page.
“End family internment camps. End the “zero-humanity” policy that created this crisis. And reunify the children with their parents,” the page reads.
