STEVENS POINT — A 28-year-old woman is recovering from injuries she received after she was attacked early sunday by a stranger in Stevens Point, according to police.
Officers were called at 3:17 a.m. Sunday for a report of an assault on Church Street near Matilda Street. The woman told police she was walking home from downtown Stevens Point when she was assaulted.
Police describe the woman’s attacker as a Hispanic man, about 5′ 5″ tall with a thin to medium build and short hair. The man was wearing a dark blue shirt, according to police, who continue to investigate the assault.
Authorities say there is no connection between this attack and a report on June 27 by a 37-year-old woman who reported she was assaulted near the same area. The 37-year-old woman’s report was later determined to be false, after investigators viewed video surveillance footage from area businesses that debunked her story.
In a public Facebook post, the Stevens Point Police Department urged the public to use caution and call police with any concerns.
“It’s never a bad idea to travel at night with a companion, be aware of your surroundings, and at a minimum, communicate with others where you are traveling and when to expect you to arrive home,” the post reads. “Do not hesitate or minimize a concern to the point of not notifying police. We are here for you and will respond accordingly. “
