WAUSAU — Wausau RiverWolves Head Coach Tim Brownell has announced he is leaving the team to pursue another job opportunity outside of hockey. A search for a new head coach is underway.
Brownell led the RiverWolves to the playoffs in the team’s inaugural season this past year, according to a Wausau RiverWolves news release.
“We’d like to thank Tim in helping lead our program this past season and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” said Owner/President Duncan Woodhull. “With the Wausau area being tremendous supporters of hockey, this makes the job attractive to many coaches. We have some very strong candidates in the new coaching search and hope to be able to have someone identified and in place rather soon.”
Before joining the RiverWolves, Brownell spent two seasons as the assistant coach for the North American 3 Hockey League’s, or NA3HL, Gillette Wild, according to the NA3HL. Brownell started his coaching career in Laramie, Wyoming, where he was the head coach for the Laramie Outlaw Midget program.
In conjunction with coaching the Wild, he also served as the Wyoming Amateur Hockey Association director of player development. Prior to coaching, Brownell played four years of college hockey for Weber State University and earned his degree in public relations and advertising. After graduating from college, he played minor professional hockey for the Toledo Walleye and the August RiverHawks.
The RiverWolves 2018-19 season schedule will be released in the coming weeks. The RiverWolves are members of the North American 3 Hockey League, one of three USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III Junior leagues. The primary mission of the NA3HL is to provide a structured developmental environment for student-athletes who have aspirations of playing in the NAHL or United States Hockey League and eventually the NCAA or American College Hockey Association.
