WAUSAU — Learn about Wausau’s architectural treasures and some of the stories that make up its history during an Architecture Ambles tour.
This second tour of a series of three is presented by the Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks and will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, near Loppnow’s Bar.
This historic working class neighborhood, formerly known as the Upper Third Street area, was once a self-contained neighborhood with three industries – Murray Machinery, Werheim Sash and Door, and the Goodwillie Box Factory. Homes were built around the neighborhood factories to house the workers and their families along with taverns and stores to supply the residents with goods.
The tour will begin at the corner of Third and DeKalb streets; parking is available on nearby streets. The route may include some uneven sidewalks; proper footwear is encouraged. This roughly 90-minute tour is about 1.5 miles. There is no admission fee and no reservations are required. Donations are appreciated.
The last tour of the series will be held on Aug. 29 in the Granite Factory Neighborhood, near the old Anderson Brothers and Johnson factory off of Townline Road.
