NEILLSVILLE — A former Thorp police chief will serve five years in prison for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.
Richard A. Boie, 74, was police chief in Thorp from 1970 until 1978. The assaults did not occur during Boie’s time as chief.
Boie, who was found guilty in April by a jury of repeated sexual assault of the same child, was sentenced Wednesday in Clark County Circuit Court. Judge Jon Counsell also ordered Boie to spend 12 years on extended supervision following his eventual release from prison.
A presentencing investigation called for 13 years in prison and seven years of extended supervision for Boie, who has no prior criminal record. At a hearing Monday, Boie’s attorney, Shawn Paul, requested the court to find Boie incompetent and requested a separate competency exam, but Judge Jon Counsell denied that request.
The assaults happened between February 2013 and December 2014, according to the criminal complaint. The victim said the assaults happened at Boie’s Thorp home.
Wednesday’s sentencing hearing took about four hours. Both parents of the victim gave emotional statements about the long-term impacts of the assault.
