Inmate attempts suicide at Marathon County Jail in Wausau

WAUSAU — A Marathon County Jail inmate is hospitalized Monday after he attempted to take his own life, police have confirmed.

Corrections officers conducing a routine cell check at about 2:55 a.m. Monday discovered the 40-year-old man unresponsive and seated on his bunk in a receiving cell, according to Marathon County Chief Deputy Chad Billeb. Officers entered the cell performed lifesaving measures until Wausau Fire and Rescue crews arrived, about seven minutes later, Billeb said.

The inmate was transported out of the jail by the Wausau Fire Department and is currently at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

“Evidence at the scene indicates that the inmate attempted to commit suicide,” Billeb said.

An investigation is ongoing, and the man’s name has not been released. Billeb said the inmate is being held on a $2,500 cash bond on charges of knowingly violating a domestic abuse order and bail jumping.

The most recent suicide at the jail was on March 19, 2016, when Mark Strurm was found unresponsive in his cell. Strum, 62, was accused of killing his wife, Patricia Sturm. Mark Sturm died hours later.
