The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office warns the public of a scam that continues to plague the area.

In this case, scammers make attempts to steal money from residents by either calling or sending a Facebook message to a target posing as a loved one or friend who is in need of money to get out of jail or for some other emergency-type reason, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The week of July 16, the scammer tried to get someone to put cash between the pages of a large book, seal the book with tape and then overnight the book using a common carrier.

The use of cloned or hacked Facebook accounts or other social media is quickly becoming the choice of scammers, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Police remind everyone that anyone asking for money or gifts is likely a scammer. Anyone who has been the victim of such a crime should contact their local police.
