WAUSAU — A 25-year-old man is in custody in Denver, Colo. in connection with an alleged bomb threat emailed to a Wausau business.
Joshua Raymond Martinez, of Denver, was arrested July 27 in Denver. Martinez faces felony charges of making a bomb scare and terrorist threats in Marathon County Circuit Court. Those charges were filed Friday, five days after the alleged threat was received by an employee at Eastbay.
According to the criminal complaint, a person using the name Jason Trujillo of Golden, Colo., attempted on the evening of July 23 to place an online order for a pair of Jordan Retro shoes valued at about $150, but the order was flagged as suspicious by the company’s fraud assessment contractor. Eastbay then sent an email notice to the gmail address associated with the order stating that the order needed further verification. In response, the suspect allegedly sent an email back that said “How about (expletive) you (expletive) and there’s a bomb that’s gonna blow on the 28th if you don’t process my order.”
The company’s security director called police the next morning to report the email.
With the assistance of the Golden, Colo. Police Department, investigators learned that the address provided by the suspect belonged to a retirement community, according to court documents. Investigators were able to trace the IP address used to send the email and GPS coordinate from the suspect’s cell phone to identify Martinez.
Marathon County Circuit Judge Greg Huber on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Martinez, who is expected to be extradited to Wisconsin for a future court appearance.
Martinez faces up to seven years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines if he is convicted. A date for his initial appearance has not yet been set.
