WAUSAU — A 28-year-old Green Bay man accused of giving a 15-year-old Wausau boy $500 and an Xbox in exchange for sex is being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
Anthony McWhorter appeared Tuesday in Marathon County Circuit Court, where he faces four felony charges: sexual assault of a child, child enticement, using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime and exposing genitals to a child.
Police say McWhorter became friends with the alleged victim over Snapchat, a mobile messaging app used to share photos, videos and messages. The app is especially popular with teens and young adults. Snapchat is different from other forms of texting and photo sharing because the messages disappear from the recipient’s phone after a few seconds.
After the two became friends on Snapchat, McWhorter met with the boy in person while he was staying at a Wausau hotel, court documents state.
After the boy’s grandmother contacted police, investigators interviewed McWhorter, who lied about his age but admitting sending sexually explicit photos of women to the boy, according to court filings. McWhorter denied the assault.
McWhorter faces up to 108 1/2 years in prison and more than $300,000 in fines if he is convicted on all counts. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 15.
