MOSINEE — Kade Stepan and Adam Moucha recently represented Mosinee High School at the annual American Legion Boys State at University of Wisconsin-Ripon.

The American Legion Boys State program is a weeklong, learn-by-doing experience that mirrors the structure and operation of state government. The program educates and prepares future leaders about character, civic engagement and patriotism.

Post commanders said there were encouraged by the optimism and energy of this year’s applicants. Participating in The American Legion Boys State is like being immersed in all aspects of government and public service, according to American Legion Boys State. The program consists of classroom work, lectures and camaraderie, with student delegates taking on elected and appointed roles to learn firsthand how democracy works and legislation is passed.

Students were selected at school and applications for the program were accepted in March. Members of American Legion Post and high school interviewees reviewed applications and made the final selection. Legionnaires look for people who understand the value of teamwork and possess outstanding leadership, character and community service qualities to participate in the program.

The list of notable alums includes former President Bill Clinton, athlete Michael Jordan, rock star Jon Bon Jovi, news personality Tom Brokaw and former U.S. Peace Corps director Gaddi Vasquez. The American Legion Boys State was held June 9-16.

Stepan is the son of Tad and Cori Stepan; Adam Moucha is the son of Pat and Sarajane Moucha.
