Wausau River District has been named one of the 10 semifinalists for the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA) by the National Main Street Center, according to a news release issued Monday.

Winners will be announced at the opening plenary of the Main Street Now Conference in Seattle, Washington on March 25, 2019.

The 2019 GAMSA recognizes exceptional Main Street America programs whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, historic preservation-based commercial district revitalization. This year’s 10 Semifinalists were selected from a nationwide pool of accredited applicants by a national jury based on their successful and innovative uses of the Main Street Approach™. Criteria includes: strength of the Main Street America program in creating an exciting place to live, work, play and visit; commitment to historic preservation; implementation of model partnerships, and demonstrated success of the Main Street Approach.

Wausau is one of more than 2,000 main street communities in the country.

This is the third year Wausau River District has been one of the top ten contenders for the GAMSA.

“It is such a great honor for the Wausau River District to be recognized for its outstanding achievements. This really shows the strength of our business community and how supportive our community members are in our main street district,” said Blake Opal-Wahoske, executive director of Wausau River District.

“Thriving main streets provide a significant economic boost to local communities and play a vital role in future attraction and investment opportunities,” said Darrin Wasniewski, downtown development program manager for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, which oversees the Wisconsin Main Street Program. “The Wausau River District, which has been a Wisconsin Main Street community since 2002, is a true success story and has set the standard for other Main Street communities statewide.”

This success and many others, along with the revival of downtown Wausau’s Exhibitour event will be celebrated at the State of the River District Dinner on Tuesday, September 25, from 6-8:30 pm at City Grill in downtown Wausau. Tickets are available online and are open to the general public. The $20 ticket price includes appetizers, a drink, dinner, and music.
