ROTHSCHILD — One person is dead after being struck by a passing vehicle while helping change a tire on I-39 in Rothschild, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lane of I-39 near mile marker 186.

A semi tractor trailer driver, later identified as 62-year-old Randal Landwehr of Marathon, was killed about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday after stopping to help a man from Bessmer, Mich., change a tire.

The Michigan driver had pulled over to fix a tire on the driver side rear axle of a camper trailer in the southbound lane, the State Patrol said. Landwehr died after being struck by another vehicle driving past the scene.

Traffic was stopped for more than two hours as police worked to clear the scene. Officials have not said if any charges or citations have been filed and no names have yet been released.
