SHAWANO — An Antigo man is facing an attempted homicide charge in connection with a brutal attack on a woman that lasted for hours following a June casino visit.
Wilbert N. Orley, 43, is accused of beating, stabbing and cutting a woman in a wooded area in the town of Almon. The June 22 attack allegedly happened after the couple argued at a Shawano-area casino.
According to the criminal complaint, the couple had already been arguing before arriving at North Star Casino, a fight that escalated over a period of hours. Orley allegedly shoved the woman and grabbed her by the neck while inside the casino. Police say no one intervened.
After leaving the casino, Orley allegedly drove the woman down a dirt road off Hilltop Road, where he pulled the victim from the vehicle by her hair, threw her to the ground and assaulted her repeatedly, according to the police report.
The victim told police Orley cut her hand and stabbed her with a large knife. She reported the assault to the Antigo Police Department and was treated for her injuries at a local hospital. Orley was arrested in Antigo, but Shawano County investigators ultimately took over the investigation because the alleged assault happened in their jurisdiction.
Police discovered several knives in Orley’s vehicle including a machete “bolo” knife with an 18-inch blade potentially tied to the assault, according to the criminal complaint.
In addition to the attempted homicide charge, Orley faces charges of reckless endangerment, false imprisonment, battery and disorderly conduct.
Orley is currently being held at the Langlade County Jail. Future court dates have not yet been set.
