WAUSAU — Police are investigating a report of a sudden death of a Wausau woman on the city’s east side.

Wausau Deputy Chief of Police Matt Barnes confirmed a 53-year-old woman was discovered dead after being called at 7:49 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 700 bock of Jefferson Street. Barnes said an investigation is underway.

Witness reports and evidence at the scene indicate that drugs may have contributed to the woman’s death, according to Capt. Ben Graham. Autopsy results, including toxicology reports, are pending.

Hours later, at about 10:30 a.m., witnesses reported a major police presence in the area of Thomas Street and Fourth Avenue on the city’s west side. Graham said family members of the deceased woman alerted investigators to a person of interest in the case, a 44-year-old man who was taken into custody in the 300 block of Thomas Street on a probation hold.

No charges against the man are currently being recommended, but an investigation is ongoing.
