The Central Wisconsin Jazz Ensemble will perform its first concerts of the season on Sept. 20 and 21, featuring selections from two Duke Ellington Suites: “The Far East Suite” and “The New Orleans Suite.”

“The Far East Suite” is considered Duke Ellington’s most famous suite of music and comes from an album recorded in 1968. It is some of the best examples of incorporating different cultures with American blues and jazz.

“The New Orleans Suite” was recorded by Ellington in 1970 and won the Grammy for Best Jazz Performance in 1971. It portrays various musical elements associated with New Orleans and attempts to capture the joy and exuberance of the city in its heyday.

The Sept. 20 concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the James F. Veninga Theater, 625 Stewart Ave., Wausau. The Sept. 21 concert will be held at 7:30 in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, Stevens Point.

For tickets, visit the CWSO Office, 800 Main St. (inside the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum) in Stevens Point, call 715-345-7726 or log on to cwso.org.
