RIB MOUNTAIN — More than 500 student racers are expected to compete Sunday in an interscholastic mountain bike race at Nine Mile Recreation Area, 8704 Red Bud Road, Rib Mountain.

Middle school and high school athletes in Wausau United Ride, a Wis. High School Cycling League-sanctioned team, started racing last month. Sunday marks the first time Nine Mile has hosted a National Interscholastic Cycling Association event.

Racing action starts at 9 a.m. for middle school riders, followed by high school freshman boys at 10 a.m. High school and middle school girls will begin competing at 11:10 a.m., followed by high school JV boys at 12:30 p.m. and varsity boys at 1:45 p.m. An award ceremony is slated for 4 p.m. Spectators are welcome.

The Wisconsin High School Cycling League welcomes all those interested to become involved in interscholastic mountain bike racing. The organization’s comprehensive program of training for students, coaches and teams is available to all.
