WAUSAU – The Wausau River District’s Holiday Open House, held this weekend, features two events: The Downtown Open House and The 26th annual Christmas on First Open House.

The Downtown Open House runs during normal business hours Nov. 2 through Nov. 4. Among businesses, Janke Book Store will have game and toy demonstrations, Poppies Boutique will offer scratch off discount cards and Blackash Urban Goods will host its one year anniversary on Nov. 3, featuring live music and prize drawing every half hour.

Take a selfie while your downtown with the hashtag #WRDholiday for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to a participating business.

This year’s participating businesses include Evolutions in Design, Shepherd and Schaller Sporting Goods, Ginny’s Antiques, Poppy’s Boutique, The Local, 319 Gallery, Merle Norman, Isaac’s Fine Apparel, Campbell Haines Menswear, Nicole’s Boutique, Janke Book Store, Blackash Urban Goods, Center for Visual Arts Gift Shop and Lamplighter Fine Gifts. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 3 and from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 4, Christmas on First offers a first chance and sneak peek at holiday gifts at stores on First, Second and Third avenues with refreshments, door prizes and a chance at a grand prize basket. Elves from Wausau West Key Club will also roam the streets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 3.

“While it is hard to believe it has been this long, we are looking forward to our 26th Annual Christmas on First,” says Kari Bender, owner of the Needle Workshop and founder of Christmas on First, in a Wausau River District news release. “The event has grown into the signature event on the near west side and we look forward to having people stroll the area to see locally owned shops they may not have taken the time to visit before. We hope people will discover something new that makes them want to return.”

This year’s participating businesses include Blossoms and Bows, Builer’s Cycles & Fitness, Buttermilk Creek, Dime and Dollar Thrift Store, Navieve Fromagerie, Needle Workshop, Wausau Awards and River District Antiques. A trolley will also run shoppers to and from the east side of the river at Jefferson and Third, Grant and Third to Alexander and Second Avenue, and Clark Street and Second Avenue on the near west side. The trolley is free to ride and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3.
