STEVENS POINT — An alumnus who is the chief executive officer of 3M will address University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point graduates and their families at the winter commencement ceremony on Dec. 15, the university announced recently.
Mike Roman will speak to nearly 600 graduates who have earned associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in the UW-Stevens Point Multi-Activity Center in Marshfield Clinic Health System Champions Hall (formerly the Health Enhancement Center), 2050 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point.
Roman has worked for 3M for 30 years, serving also as its chief operating officer, executive vice president, leader of Industrial (3M’s largest business group), chief strategist and senior designer, according to a UWSP news release. He has lived and led businesses around the world. Roman also worked for the Hughes Aircraft Company.
He attended UW-Stevens Point from 1978-80 and played for the Pointer football team, according to the release. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California. A former “big,” he is a longtime supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

The student speaker will be Hannah Champion, an interior architecture and business administration-marketing graduate from Stevens Point. Chancellor Bernie Patterson will preside over the ceremonies and give the welcome and charge to the graduates. The new alumni will be welcomed by Fran and Bobbie Roman, parents of the commencement speaker and alumni from Stevens Point.
Andrea Franklin, a choral and general music education graduate from Fond du Lac, will sing the national anthem and UW-Stevens Point’s alma mater. She will be accompanied by the UW-Stevens Point Band, directed by Assistant Professor Michael Butler.
