WAUSAU — Rescue crews responded en masse Thursday to both sides of the Wisconsin River after a report that children had fallen through the ice, but all children were located and are safe, police said.

Crews were called at about 4:30 p.m. for the possible ice rescue and were largely stationed in Scholfield Park, 606 E. Randoph St., Wausau.

Police say a group of children had been playing on the ice and there were concerns that a child had broken through.

Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven said no one actually went into the river. The scene has since been cleared.
