Wisconsin Rapids– Over the last decade, the Wausau West boys hockey team has been one of the most consistent programs in the state.

Tuesday night, the Warriors showed they are still among the state’s elite,

West controlled every facet of the game, and tallied their third straight shutout as they cruised past Wisconsin Rapids 5-0 at the South Wood County Recreation Center in Wisconsin Valley Conference action.

The duo of senior Sam Techel junior Cade Lemmer did the lion’s-share of the damage on the night as they accounted for six points- Lemmer with two goals and and assist, and Techel with a pair of assists and a goal.

“Those guys came out fast and they were on them from the first shift,” West coach Brian Brandt Jr. said. “They were able to establish puck possession down low and they were able to play offense.”

West wasted little time in getting the scoring started as Lucas Langlois scored the first goal at 3 minutes 27 seconds for the fast 1-0 lead. Just 24 seconds later, Lemmer tallied his first goal to boost the lead to 2-0.

Lemmer added another goal at the 12:00 minute mark to take a 3-0 after the first period of play.

“They move the puck well, and transition fantastic,” Rapids coach Pat McDonald said. “They all have high hockey I.Q.’s and are coached well.”

In the second period, the Warriors continued to pressure the Raiders, but Rapids goalie Trevin Milbauer had other plans.

Milbauer made several diving stops and had a pair of shots hit the post and bounce to the corners as he was able to keep the potent Warriors offense off the board to hold the score at 3-0. For the game, Milbauer stopped 44 of 49 shots.

“One thing we talk about is not being satisfied and in the second period, I think we played satisfied,” Brandt said. “Their goaltender played really well tonight and made some saves he shouldn’t have, and it frustrated us.”

West struggled in the early portions of the third period, but Jacob Cebula got the Warriors back on the board with an unassisted goal at 7:35 with Trechel concluding the scoring at 15:22.
