New details have been released in connection with the death of a Wausau man reported missing over the weekend.

On Dec. 22, the Wausau Police Department enlisted the public’s help in locating Paul D. Hitz amid concerns for his welfare by family members who had not been in contact with him for several days. Police say Mr. Hitz left his address on the northeast side of Wausau between Dec. 19 and Dec. 20 and was last seen near a northwest Wausau restaurant.

At 1:50 p.m. Sunday, the Wausau Fire Department and Marathon County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a vehicle found flipped over on the ice of a creek on CTH W. There was also a report of a body lying on the ice, a man later identified as Mr. Hitz, police said.

The cause of death remains under investigation. The Wausau Police Department has taken lead in the death investigation with the cooperation of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department and Marathon County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased,” police said, in a news release issued Monday morning.
