The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Marathon County as a strong storm system approaches the area. Expect 3 to 5 inches of heavy snow to fall between Wednesday and Thursday morning, weather officials say.

The snow will eventually change over to light rain or drizzle late Thursday morning or early afternoon as warmer air arrives. But the rain will gradually change back to snow or a wintry ix from northwest to southeast late Thursday night into Friday morning, when another inch or two of snow is possible.

In addition, wet roads will likely freeze as cold air arrives, resulting in hazardous travel conditions.

A winter weather advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Expect snow-covered roads and limited visibility. Use caution while driving.
