Volunteer opportunities 

Silver Pageant assistance. Ascension Hospice is having an event Feb. 23 at Wausau East High School to honor the achievements of senior women in our community. Volunteers are needed to usher, assist the contestants and help with other activities. Contact Pam at 715-204-3440 or [email protected].

Hurricane relief trip. Good News Project is seeking volunteers for its trip to Lumberton, North Carolina, from March 24-30. They will repair homes that were damaged by hurricanes Matthew in October of 2016 and Florence in 2018. Contact Bettina at 715-843-5985 or [email protected].

Visit and decorate. Those who live in area assisted living centers and/or nursing homes enjoy short visits from compassionate people. Aseracare Hospice invites you to visit someone while bringing in window decorations or magazine pictures for doors or bulletin boards. Contact Shirley at 715-355-4797 or [email protected].

Family Lunch Day helpers. In January, eat lunch with children whose parents are unable to attend the monthly Family Lunch Days at Franklin Elementary School. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., welcome families, wipe tables and sit with children. Contact Roxane at 715- 261-0584 or [email protected].

Read to kids over the lunch hour in Edgar. Reading scores improve and positive relationships will be built with kindergarteners and first-graders on Fridays over the lunch hour (11 a.m. to noon) at Edgar Elementary School. Contact Krista at 715-298-5719 or [email protected].

In-kind donated items needed

Undergarments needed. Bare Necessities is a project of the Workplace Volunteer Council that collects and distributes new undergarments to families in need. Boys size 2T, 3T and 4T is especially needed right now. Men’s and women’s are accepted as well. Contact Janet at 715-359-2073 or [email protected].

Rebecca’s Closet. Rebecca’s Closet is in need of children’s new/gently used winter gear to provide to families in need. Most needed items include: school-aged boots, snow pants and waterproof mittens. Donations can be made at the United Way office M-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., 705 S. 24th Ave., Suite 400B.
