A 19-year-old man who shot two people and stabbed a third victim at a Plover home in April was sentenced Friday in Portage County Circuit Court to five years in prison, minus time served while awaiting trial.
Alec Varney, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was convicted Nov. 9 of first degree reckless injury by use of a dangerous weapon, second degree reckless endangerment and battery. As part of a plea agreement, seven additional charges were dismissed but read into the record and were considered at sentencing.
On April 26, 2018, at approximately 4:49 AM, deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call of a shooting in the 3800 block of Bluebird Drive in the Town of Plover.
Varney fled the scene but was arrested after an hours-long manhunt. All three victims survived the attack, police said.
Portage County Circuit Judge Thomas Flugaur also ordered Varney to undergo counseling and spend an additional 10 years on extended supervision following his release from prison. Varney, who has been held on a $100,000 cash bond since his arrest, was given 254 days credit for time spent in jail.
