Police say two people are in custody and a third “person of interest” is being sought in connection with the disappearance and death of a Plover man whose body was discovered Jan. 9 in Portage County.

Gary Mayek, 39, was found dead in his vehicle in an unspecified rural Portage County location four days after he was last seen in the village of Plover and two days after he was reported missing. In a news release, police are now calling that death suspicious. Autopsy results are pending.

Police traced Mayek’s movements to a hotel, where surveillance video showed three people of interest in connection with the investigation, according to the release.

Portage County Sheriff’s officials have identified the three as 44-year-old Jason Meisel, 46-year-old Matthew Zdzieblowski, and 24-year-old Amber Weisnicht.

Zdzieblowski and Weisnicht are in custody at the Portage County Jail and are being held on preliminary charges of hiding a corpse, officials said.

Police continue to search for Meisel and are asking anyone with information on Mayek’s death or on Meisel’s location to call the Portage County Sheriff’s Department.

Members of the public are asked not to apprehend or confront Meisel but to call 715-346-1400.

The investigation into Mayek’s death is ongoing with assistance from the Plover Police Department.
