Merrill– The Wausau East Lumberjacks overcame a six-point deficit at halftime and pushed Merrill to the brink, but ultimately fell by the final score of 77-74 on Friday night.

Gabe Krueger and Ryan LaCerte led Wausau East with 19 points each.

Krueger had 10 rebounds and made 7-8 free throw attempts.  He hit 6-9 field goals.

Krueger had a three point attempt rim out at the buzzer that would have tied the game.

LaCerte was 6-10 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds.

“We did a nice job of handling adversity all night, staying composed an executing out game plan,” said East coach Paul Dimka. “It was a great high school game, with both teams leaving it on the court. We had several players step up at different times, keeping us within striking distance.  In addition to LaCerte and Kronberger keeping us in the game early, Trey Buchberger knocked down four second half threes to bring us back.”

Buchberger had 16 points for East; Forrest Kronberger added 14.

East is now 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the Valley, while Merrill improves to 5-1 in conference play and 11-3 overall.
