WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

White House and congressional leaders have reached a short-term deal to end the longest government shutdown in US history.

President Donald Trump spoke to reporters outside the White House at about 1:15 p.m. Friday to announce the deal and thank federal workers. He pledged federal employees would get back pay “as soon as possible.”

Trump called the three-week deal an opportunity for leaders from both parties to work together and “put country before party.”

In his speech, Trump touted his proposed border wall and said it is needed to stem the flow of illicit drugs and illegal immigrants into the country and vowed to commit resources to upgraded technology at the border.
