WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

MARATHON COUNTY — A limited number of snowmobile trails are finally set to open this week in Marathon County, according to the Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.

Zone 1 snowmobile trails will be open as of 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Additional snowfall is necessary before other zones open, officials said.

In addition, Zone 1 ATV trails will open at 8 a.m. Wed., Feb. 6. ATVs are prohibited on any trail when the air temperature is above 28 degrees. ATV riders are reminded to check a current map to see if the trails they want to use are open to their vehicles.

The Mountain-Bay Trail is closed to ATVs at all times. All Marathon County Snowmobile trails are closed to UTVs. UTVs are not all-terrain vehicles and do not meet the statutory definition for an ATV.

The nighttime speed limit everywhere in Wisconsin is 55 mph.

“Please respect our landowners,” officials said. “Leaving a designated trail and/or snowmobiling on someone’s property without permission is trespassing.”
