Wausau– The Newman boys basketball team picked up a victory on Friday night as they defeated Chequamegon 66-57.
The Cardinals limited Chequamegon to just 17 points in the first half, while the second half became much more of a shoot-out.
“Give Chequamegon credit they played hard and never let us pull away tonight,” said Newman coach Dan Garrett. “I am proud of the way we battled and handled adversity. Chequamegon took the lead 41-43 with about five minutes left and we did a great job handling their run and making an 8-0 run of our own to take control of the game.
Ben Leischer led Newman with with 19 points.
Garrett noted the play of Kasey Kalafice, who has missed time due to injury.
“Kasey is finally healthy and providing us a spark defensively,” Garrett said. “This is a good win for us a good start to the month in a time where we need to be finding ways to win and playing good basketball. We will enjoy this one tonight and prepare for Rib Lake next Thursday.”
