WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

SHAWANO — Rescue crews pulled two men from the water Saturday in two separate snowmobiling incidents, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

The first call came just before 8 p.m. when police received a report that a snowmobile went through the ice on Shawano Lake. Members of the Shawano County Dive team and the Department of Natural Resources both responded and pulled a 52-year-old Illinois man from the water, police said.

A short time later a second snowmobile plunged through the ice. A 39-year-old Appleton man was rescued.

No other injuries were reported and no names were released.

The incidents prompted Shawano County authorities to issue a warning to snowmobiles about dangerous conditions on the lake. Police say a large pressure crack near the island resulted in open water about 100 yards long.

Snowmobilers are urged to use extreme caution on the lake.
