WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

By Sunday morning, all Marathon County snowmobile trails will finally be open, thanks to heavy snow that blanketed the region this week.

Zones 1 and 2 opened on Friday, with Zones 3 and 4 set to open at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Zone 5 will open at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Designated trails will open to ATVs at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, but only if the air temperature is 28 degrees or colder.

Snowmobilers are being cautioned about unsafe ice and open water, however, with a number of trail closures.

The Dept. of Natural Resources started the aeration system Friday, Feb. 8, at the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir Aerator adjacent to Big Eau Pleine County Park. The aerator, which was installed to improve fish survival rates, creates unsafe ice conditions and open water. The DNR installed rope barriers with flagging and reflective signs across the entrance to the area to warn of the danger. Warning signs are also posted at boat landings.
