WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department is warning motorists of black ice conditions throughout the county, in a traffic safety alert issued Monday morning.

“Please reduce your speed, increase the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles, and allow extra time to reach your destination,” officials said.

Even roadways that appear clear can be hazardous, officials said.

Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, is a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, especially on roads. The ice itself is not black, but visually transparent, allowing the often black road below to be seen through it. When black ice forms, it can be particularly dangerous to motorists because it is virtually invisible – until it’s too late.

The Marathon County Highway Department is working continuously to spray and salt roads, but difficult conditions persist in many areas.
