WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

RHINELANDER — Police in Rhinelander say a woman who was assaulted and being held at gunpoint inside a local hotel escaped after smashing a liquor bottle over the man’s head.

WJFW reports that police were called at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night to the Rodeway Inn, 667 W. Kemp St., Rhinelander, where they assisted the woman safely from the room and into the hallway.

Officers attempted to persuade the man to exit the room but say the suspect refused to communicate. That led police to call in the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Response Team, which later entered the room and used pepper spray bullets to subdue the suspect, according to a WJFW report..

The area was cleared at around 9:15 p.m. There’s no word on the woman’s condition, and the suspect’s name has not yet been released.

The suspect is being held at the Oneida County Jail.
