TOWN OF PINE RIVER — Police are investigating an apparent homicide in the Lincoln County town of Pine River, after a 77-year-old woman was found shot to death in her home.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department responded at 8:30 a.m. Thursday for what they initially thought would be a welfare check, according to a news release. Deputies arrived at the scene and found the woman inside. They also discovered a 78-year-old man who was also shot and critically wounded.

The man’s current condition has not been released.

On Thursday, police would say only that they had responded to a critical incident, but released no other details until Friday morning.

Police are treating this as a homicide, but say this appears to be an isolated incident and the public is not in danger.

The scene was processed by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab.

No names have been released. Additional news releases are expected as further information is available.
