One person is dead and many people were injured following a pileup Sunday on I-41 that involved about 100 vehicles, officials said.
Emergency crews responded to a initial report of a 40-vehicle pileup in the southbound lanes of I-41 at Highway G in Neenah about 11:10 a.m. Reports from police scanner radio traffic referred to the pileup as a “mass casualty incident,” according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
As of 2:20 p.m. Sunday, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is estimating that I-41 will remain closed for at least 10 hours. In a Twitter post, the DOT confirmed the fatality and said that all drivers and passengers have been removed from the crash site.
Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Todd Christopherson said Sunday during a news conference that whiteout conditions were to blame for the crash, which could take weeks to investigate.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. — As many as 40 vehicles are involved in a crash that shut down I-41 from Neenah to Oshkosh.
According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, I-41 is shut down from Breezewood Lane in Neenah to Hwy. 76 in Oshkosh in both directions. The shutdown stretches further in the southbound lanes.
Traffic is being rerouted at Hwy. 10 to Hwy. 76 around the crash site. Buses are being used to help drivers and passengers get off the highway to a safe location.
The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. Sunday.

Police say whiteout conditions are to blame for the crash. There’s no word yet on injuries.
