WAUSAU, Wis. — An effort is underway in Wausau to expand a youth lacrosse program for girls in grade 2 through grade 8.
The program aims to serve as a “feeder” program for the high school team, according to parent representative Nicky Lindman. Lacrosse is growing in popularity across Wisconsin and the Midwest. Wausau is the northernmost location for a girls youth lacrosse team in the state.
Lindman said the group is reaching out to all surrounding communities as the organization seeks to grow the program. Girls from Antigo, Mosinee, Merrill, Tomahawk and the greater Wausau area are all welcome to participate.
This year, first-year players can participate for just $30 for the entire season, which runs from April through mid-June.
An informational meeting for parents will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at John Marshall Elementary School, 1918 Lamont St., Wausau. Representatives will help all new players register that evening and will hand out equipment for players who need it.
Lindman said practices begin April 2 indoors at the gymnasium inside John Marshall. Indoor practices are twice per week, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Outdoor practices at Airport Park will begin when the field is ready, and will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evenings.
Potential players who participate in other activities and sports should not be deterred from joining, Lindman said.
“Our coaches are flexible,” she added.
Games and tournaments are now being scheduled.
