WAUSAU PILOT AND REVIEW

Friday morning driving conditions are challenging for motorists as many county and municipal roads remain under flood conditions.

According to the Portage County Highway Department, county roads including CTH R from STH 54 to USH 10, CTH HH from CTH R to CTH J, and CTH BB from STH 54 to the county line remain flooded and should not be traveled. There are also many other county and municipal roads that are experiencing flooding.

In addition, the intersection at Post Road/STH 54/CTH B is also under water and closed. A detour route is posted but travelers should expect additional travel times near this area.

Portage County Highway Commissioner Nathan Check is reminding the public that not all flooded areas are marked.

“If you encounter a flooded roadway, do not drive through the flood waters,” Check wrote, in a news release issued early Friday. “It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a car. When you encounter flood water, turn around, don’t drown. Also, the public should stay out of flood waters. Flood water can contain bacteria, sewage, sharp objects, and other dangerous items.”

Crews will be continuing on working to improve the flooding conditions throughout this morning and today.
